Oil on canvas. Private collection.
Today Budby is a village about 25 km north of Nottingham, close to Clumber Park. On the back of the picture the initials 'RB' appear as a rather elegant monogram.
The owner of this picture comments, 'While the subject is an apparently idyllic English country scene, the figures in the field on the right are clearly a 'field gang' gathering in the corn with a gangmaster on horseback. The other rider, seen from behind, appears to be using an imperious gesture to what looks like a downtrodden peasant woman. Maybe it's my imagination!' (see detail).
Approx 500 × 240 mm.
