The Goodwin Family Bakery in Warser Gate

The Goodwin Family Bakery in Warser Gate

1861. Watercolour on paper. Private collection.

The Goodwins were Reuben's sister-in-law's family. The picture shows their bakery In Warser Gate. The street still exists in the Lace Market area of Nottingham but the bakery building has not survived.

At the bottom of the picture is a dedication that suggests it was painted as a Christmas present for the baker's son. In beautiful copper plate, the dedication reads: 'The House in which John Thos Goodwin was Born March 10 1855. Drawn and presented to him in Remembrance by his Affectionate Uncle, Reuben Bussey. Dec 24 1861. Taken down [ie painted] Aug 1861". Family lore has it that the boy with the tray on his head is J T Goodwin himself.

The picture has many attractive details.
